plein air workshop

 hydra, greece

may 21st - june 4th, 2008

This workshop will focus on the art of color seeing in one of the color capitals of the world; the island of Hydra, Greece. As you gaze into the staggering beauty that is this Greek island, you will learn to recognize how that beauty is an incredible arrangement of colored shapes. By then learning to translate those shapes into color on your paper or canvas, you will see how to capture some of the vibrancy and aliveness of the island in your finished study.

We will paint the amazing color aesthetic of the Greek people, from their whitewashed houses with red tiled roofs and colored shutters and doors to their multi-colored fishing boats and restaurants. And of course, we'll paint nature's aesthetic in the transcendent blues of the water and variety of colors in the land.

You will learn how luminosity, three dimensional form and atmosphere are all achieved in a painting through the simple visual truth of color relationships.

Come and be enchanted. And learn how to bring that enchantment into your paintings.

The dates for our trip to Greece are May 21-June 4, 2008. We arrive in Athens in the evening, after a  full day of travel. We stay at a hotel at the base of the Acropolis that first night. Then spend the first day enjoying the cultural highlights of Athens , including a trip to the Acropolis to see the Parthenon and the Temple of Athena. Next morning we're off to the island where we will spend the next 10 days. The workshop will consist of 5 days of painting in the mornings and afternoons. Evenings will be spent in the tavernas dining lazily on the wonderful cuisine of Greece. There will be another 5 days to enjoy the island as you wish. Hiking, swimming, sightseeing and of course painting if you'd like.  We will spend our last day in Athens for any last minute sightseeing or shopping and depart Athens on June 4 early in the morning, arriving Denver that same day!

The price is $2,075 per person. This includes all accommodations, transfers and the workshop fee. A single supplement is available for $300. Price of package is subject to change based on changes in exchange rates.
